Abstract

his study attempts to examine concept of artistic dance with two components - publicity and improvsiation - by limiting the range of dance to an art area in various meanings and values of dance. This study slected a method to define artistic dance as a component of dance in the course of dance study in cognitive areas. Artisitc dance among various kinds of dance components can be both a common component to be an intersection set with other arts and a unique component to be differentiated from other arts in the category of arts. Although there has been no change in classified kinds or terms of such components in existing theories, there certainly exists difference in range or concept of the components, And, difference of meanings between new terms and existing terms is an unavoidable phenomenon of the times. If change in the range or concept of the components has relation to science and technology development, existence of newly produced terms calling each component depends on popularization of them in academic knowledge areas. As a result of researching identity of dance as a component enabling to prevent dance from existing as artistic, scientific 'ghetto' by isolating special terms of dance in academic knowledge space and to participate in the intellectual world, the following terms were reappraised in this study; Publicity in dance means a performance as image communication on condition of presentation in a space-time continuum and participation in intellectual society. To participate in the intellectual society symbolization of dance is a classification means for recognition in human thinking system, where the same image is interpreted into various meanings. Improvisation in dance as art exists with a voluntary intention of a creator and it shall not be temporary but continuous means the original intention shall pass through systematic and intentional procedure so that it can lead to a result. Therefore, it does not mean that as a procedure but that as a motif.
