산학연계 교육 선진사례로서신시내티대학교의 co-op 교육 특성 분석 및 시사점

최근 몇 년 동안 국내 대학에서 현장실습은 폭발적인 증가세를 보이고 있다. 이에 따라 정부 차원에서 현장실습 운영규정을 마련하여 가이드라인을 제시하고 있으나, co-op 교육 내실화를 학내외적인 시스템 정비가 요청되는상황이다. 본 연구는 세계 최초로 co-op 교육을 시작하였으며, 오늘날에도 가장 선진적인 사례로 평가받고 있는 신시내티대학의 co-op 교육 사례를 심층적으로 분석하여 정책적 시사점을 도출하고자 한다. 본 연구는 신시내티대학의co-op 교육 운영 특성을 국내 대학들의 장기현장실습 추진 과정에서 제기되는 핵심 이슈 가운데, ⅰ) co-op 교육과전공교육의 연계성, ⅱ) co-op 교육의 담당 조직과 운영 체계, ⅲ) 학생과 실습기관 간의 중개 및 관리의 3가지 측면을 중심으로 분석하였다. 분석결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 학부 2학년 이후부터 최소 3번 이상의 co-op 학기를 수업학기와 교대로 실시하여 이론과 실무교육을 긴밀하게 연계함으로써, 전공 실무역량 강화라는 본질적인 co-op 교육 목표를 달성하고 있다. 둘째, 전공별로 co-op 교육 전담교수를 배치하여 co-op 교육 전반을 담당하게 하여, 학과교수들의부담을 줄이고 교육의 질 향상을 도모하고 있다. 셋째, co-op 교육 참여 학생과 실습기관 간의 매칭률을 높여 실질적인 기업업무를 학생이 수행함으로써, 급여 지급에 대한 갈등을 해결하고 상호 간의 만족도를 제고시키고 있다. 넷째, 대학 내 분쟁조정위원회를 설치하여 co-op 교육 관련 각종 문제를 해결하고 대학 차원에서 학생 보호를 우선시한다.
Abstract
There are several arguments that the policy of field practice education in Korea needs to change the part of overall despite the increase in field practice performances and the expansion of regulations. This paper aims to analyze the characteristics of co-operative education in University of Cincinnati(UC) and to provide a recommendation for promoting the field practice in Korea. The co-operative education at the UC has been a role model of universities around the world as a systemic field practice model since it was devised by Herman Schneider in 1906. In this context, we analyzed the point at issue in the field practice, classified by i) linkage with curriculum and co-op, ii) co-op management organization, iii) the consistency between major and jobs. The results of the study are as follows. First, the co-operative education of UC has managed not only the curriculum of field practice but also the theoretical curriculum by adjusting the timing and frequency of co-operative education participation. Second, the co-operative education of UC has improved the quality of co-op education by employing and deploying co-op Faculty Adviser whom they are responsible for all the tasks of co-operative education and reduce the work burden of the major faculty. Third, participants of co-operative education of UC are highly satisfied with the co-op education because they have the consistency between major and jobs, the solution of pay conflict that is coordinated by the UC. Finally, UC provides an efforts to protect the students from external threats and to solve the problem during the co-operative education through the establishment of Professional Standards Review Committee.
