Abstract

This study explores the perceptions of participants in the Korean national breaking team selection event (Breaking K) in the context of breaking's inclusion as an official Olympic sport. Through in-depth interviews with experienced break- ers, this research examines how they perceive the national selection system and the broader implications of breaking’s institutionalization and sportsization. The findings suggest that while participants recognized the Olympic selection process as an opportunity to gain career recognition and social status, they also expressed concerns about the potential loss of creativity and cultural identity due to formal- ization. The selection event was seen as a symbolically prestigious platform but was also critiqued for its lack of transparency, cultural engagement, and acces- sibility. Participants reported discomfort with unfamiliar administrative systems and voiced skepticism about the fairness of judging and communication with orga- nizers. The study also highlights tensions between breaking as a cultural practice and as a sport. Some participants embraced the Olympic format and adapted their styles accordingly, while others preferred local, community-based events where expressive freedom and peer interaction remain central. These contrasting percep- tions illustrate the ongoing negotiation between cultural authenticity and institu- tional integration in the evolution of breaking. This study provides meaningful insights for developing more inclusive and culturally resonant policies for break- ing's future in sport.
