Abstract

This study aims to examine how the influence of commedia dell’arte mani- fested in the modernism of the Ballets Russes. In particular, the clown characters and their archetypal and stylized roles commonly evoked in Petrushka(1911) and Pulcinella(1920) served as active devices to address the crisis of identity and anxi- ety that were major concerns of the 20th century and to pursue artistic innovation. To elucidate this, the adaptation and integration of commedia dell'arte ele- ments in each work was comparatively analyzed in terms of content and themes, choreography, character implementation, stage design, and modernist characteris- tics. Petrushka is a tragedy arising from a love triangle involving a puppet brought to life, representing an expressionist modernist work that explores the duality of fragmented existence and inner turmoil through a timid and introverted character expressed with disjointed movements and turn-in position. Pulcinella presents a comic narrative infused with satirical overtones in which masks and disguises play out in a farcical attempt to escape the trap of romantic jealousy. appearing as a neoclassical modernist work that blends mime with ballet techniques, emphasiz- ing the stylization of exaggerated gestures and structural arrangement in choreog- raphy, and demonstrating complex and multifaceted character implementation that amplifies the superficiality of masks. Ultimately, the puppet and the mask in these works reflect the contrasting tones of tragedy and comedy in modernism, highlighting its heaviness and lightness, and reveal shifts in the cultural context of the time. Furthermore, the incorporation of traditional elements such as commedia dell’arte played a part in shaping the Bal- lets Russes’ distinctive ‘period modernism’, a modernism marked by the interplay of tradition and experimentation.
