Abstract
This study aims to revitalize dance arts in Jeonbuk Province by analyzing the current state of local dance performances and festivals from 2022 and 2024, through both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Employing data-driven cul tural ecology analysis as the main methodology, the study examined data from KOPIS, official municipal websites, government and public reports, press releas es, promotional materials, relevant organizations, and online/SNS archives to pro vide a comprehensive overview of Jeonbuk’s dance ecosystem. The findings reveal that a total of 278 dance performances were presented over the three-year period, showing relatively stable numbers across years but notable imbalances in genre, region and generation. By genre, Korean dance accounted for the largest share, indicating the genre’s dominant role in the region. Ballet relied heavily on external touring companies, while contemporary dance remained limited in scale, though some regional companies demonstrated continuity. Geo graphically, Jeonju led with 130 performances. Generationally, opportunities for young dancers were scarce. Regarding festivals, although 16 dance-related festi vals are held in Jeonbuk, there is no long-standing representative event, and the lack of online promotion and information accessibility has constrained audience engagement. Overall, the study identifies structural issues in Jeonbuk’s dance ecosystem, including concentration of genre in traditional Korean dance, regional and gen eration imbalance in performance opportunities, and weak online promotion and audience outreach. To address these challenges, the study suggests the establish ment of online platforms for audience development, regionally specialized pro gramming, support systems for emerging choreographers, and stronger collabora tion between public and private sectors. This research provides foundational data for the revitalization of dance arts in Jeonbuk Province and offers theoretical and practical insights for future cultural policy and implementation strategies.
