Abstract

Jinyang's book <Akseo (the book on music)> is the book where records of music extracted from ten scriptures among the thirteen Chineseclassics are kept and the meanings of them are explained. Among them, in the ‘Yegihunui (禮記訓義)’, Jinyang clarified his views on music by noting records on music, especially focusing on the idea of manners and music. In the book ‘Gongjahangeo (孔子閒居)’, Oji (五至ːfive ways) which is the essence of the great scholar Confucius's philosophy 'Manners and Music' and Sammu (Three things are absent.) which is the origin of 'Manners and Music' are explained and the ways to practice Sammu and reach Oji are shown. I intend to study Jinyang's theory on music by centering around the book ‘Gongjahangeo (孔子閒居) in the ‘Yegihunui (禮記訓義)’. What Jinyang tried to express in this book was not to describe a king's virtues and political achievements but the world of the best value that is the world of music which can be reached only through a king's moral excellence. And the best world of music can only be reached by the person who masters manners and music by practicing through Oji and Sammu. To perform Sammu, which is the origin of manners and music, is to lead to Oji which is the essence of manners and music. In short, the final state which is attained by mastering the origin of manners and music and leading to Oji and practicing Sammu is the world of Museongjiak (music with no sound).
