이 글은 『삼국사기』에서 언급된 선도성모 이야기가 『삼국유사』에서 변개된 양상을 살피고, 그 의미를 밝히는데 목적이 있다. 선도성모는 도선사상(道仙思想)에서 기인한 산신격이었는데, 『삼국사기』에서 우리나라의 시조를 낳은 중국 황실의 딸이 선도성모로 좌정하였다는 모호한 언급이 있은 후, 『삼국유사』에 와서 일연은 혁거세와 알영을 낳은 신라의 시조모 신격으로 단정하고 있다. 일연은 경주의 서쪽 산신인 서술성모를 선도성모와 동일시하기 위해 『삼국사기』에 수록된 혁거세신화에 ‘서쪽, 닭, 흰색, 계룡, 계림’ 등의 용어를 부가하여 새롭게 이야기를 구성하고 있다. 그런데 일연이 이와 같은 설명으로 신라의 시조모로 선도성모를 단정하고자 하였다면 혁거세신화보다는 김알지신화와 훨씬 유관할 수 있다. 한편 일연이 선도성모를 신라의 시조모로 단장하고자 한 의도는 『삼국유사』 ‘감통편’의 <선도성모수희불사>에서 찾을 수 있다. 선도성모가 불사를 돕기 위해 금을 내놓았다는 이야기를 통해 불교의 위대함을 과시하고 포교의 장치로 사용하고자 한 것이다. 그런데 선도성모가 단순히 산신으로서 불교에 감화되어 불사를 도왔다는 것보다는 신라의 시조모로서 불사를 적극적으로 도왔다고 선전하는 것이 포교의 효과를 극대화할 수 있었으므로, 산신인 서술성모를 선도성모와 동일시하고, 다시 시조모로 신격화한 것으로 볼 수 있다.
Abstract
Finding out the meaning of the modification pattern of Sundosungmo story referred from <Samkuksagi> to <Samkukyousa> is this paper's purpose. Sundosungmo was a kind of mountain god originated from ideas, Ilyeon regards firmly Sundosungmo as Ancestor's mother of Shinla dynasty after subtle reference of <Samkuksagi> stating the daughter of Chinese emperor who bear the founder of our country set herself as Sundosungmo. Ilyeon made a plot newly adding idiom like 'west side, chicken, white color, gaeryong, gaerim' to Hyukguse myth listed in <Samkuksagi> in order to synthesize Susulsungmo who is western mountain god of Gyungju and Sundosungmo. In the mean time, Ilyeon's intention to decide Sundosungmo as Shinla's ancestor's mother was found in <Sundosungmo Suheebulsa> of chapter 'Gamtongpyoen' among chapters of <Samkukyousa> The reason why Susulsungmo (mountain god) and Sundosungmo were regarded as the same figure is to propagate buddhism by using the story that the founder's mother of Shinla helped the construction of temple.
