전통 스토리텔링의 콘텐츠적 가능성

스토리텔링은 ‘스토리story’와 ‘텔링telling’이 결합된 말이다. 그러나 그동안 스토리의 정태적 측면만이 고려되고, 텔링의 동적이고 구체적인 현장이 등한시 되어왔음이 사실이다. 그러므로 스토리텔링 논의에 있어서, 스토리 중심에서 탈피하여 말하기(tell)와 상호작용성(ing)을 중심으로 하는 논의가 필요하다. 이런 점을 적극 수용하여 이 글에서 거론하는 ‘전통 스토리텔링’이란 설화 구연상황을 적극적으로 반영하기 위한 용어이다. 스토리텔링이 구연화자에 의해 표현될 경우가 바로 구술 연행이라는 ‘전통 스토리텔링’이라 할 수 있다. 사실상 스토리텔링의 오랜 역사는 이야기 연행과 같은 구연 스토리텔링으로부터 비롯된 것이다. 물론 현 시대의 스토리텔링이 구술 시대의 스토리텔링과 같은 것일 수는 없겠지만, 전통 스토리텔링의 구연상황은 텔링이 중요한 이 시대에 새로운 시사점을 던져 준다. 우선 전통 스토리텔링의 형식에서 주목할 것이 바로 연행의 ‘반성성’이다. 이는 연행 형식 내에 자기 자신을 점검하고 되돌아보는 일종의 자기-참조의 양식이다. 이를 통해 전통 스토리텔링은 텔링의 현장성과 일회성을 수시로 의식하는 면모를 보이고 있다. 두 번째는 전통 스토리텔링의 ‘틀’이다. 틀을 통해 전통 스토리텔링은 연행의 시간과 공간을 확보한다. 틀은 일종의 연행 분위기를 조장하고 형성하는 일련의 발화와 행위를 포괄하는 것이다. 이를 효과적으로 다루기 위해, 전통 스토리텔링의 틀에 대한 일반적인 모형을 제시하였다. 전통 스토리텔링의 ‘반성성’과 ‘틀’을 통해 세 가지 정도로 이야기 문법을 거론해 보았다. ‘문제→해결’, ‘문제→문제’, ‘해결→문제’ 등의 전통 스토리텔링을 검토하면서 이들 이야기가 현대의 연행 콘텐츠에 어떤 방식으로 관련될 수 있는지 논의를 진행시켰다.
Abstract
Storytelling is a compound of two words, 'story' and 'telling'. While the static aspect of 'story' has been emphasized, the dynamic and specific aspect of telling has been ignored. So, in the argument of 'storytelling', it is necessary to break from talking about 'story' and discuss the matter in terms of 'telling' and 'interaction'. In order to accept this need, the term 'Traditional Storytelling' is coined to engage 'oral-storytelling situation' more actively. When 'storytelling' is expressed by a storyteller, it can be referred to 'traditional storytelling', called 'oral performance'. In fact, the storytelling, which has a long history, originated from oral storytelling such as 'oral narration'. It is natural that our current storytelling isn't the same storytelling of an oral period, but the traditional storytelling casts a few crucial viewpoints to us these days when 'telling' has a significant meaning. In the first place, it is 'reflexivity' that we should note in the form of 'storytelling'. It is a kind of self-reference which means reflecting and looking back at oneself in the form of narration. Through this reflexivity, the storytelling is affected by the site of telling and an aspect of one-off thing very frequently. Another point we need to note is a frame. Through this frame, the traditional storytelling come to hold time and space of narration. The frame implies a series of utterance an behaviors encouraging and forming a mood of narration. To deal with the matter effectively, a general model was suggested about a frame of traditional storytelling. Through traditional storytelling's reflexivity and frame, the grammar of narration was discussed in three ways. Reviewing the forms of traditional storytelling such as 'problem→solution', 'problem→problem', and 'solution→problem', the argument about how these stories are involved in the current narration was introduced.
