Abstract

During the Joseon Dynasty, literati engaged in various collective activities to establish their identities as scholars and to form social and cultural networks. One significant practice was si-mun su-chang(詩文酬唱), which involved composing poems using the same rhyme characters(韻字) and exchanging these poems along with responses. This method of interaction allowed them to assert their distinct identity. The numerous records of such gatherings and poetic exchanges reflect the literati's efforts to distinguish themselves. This study examines how the interactions among Joseon literati were represented in literary works, focusing on the Bukgwan Suchangrok(北關詶唱錄) as a key case. The Bukgwan Suchangrok was compiled in 1664 to commemorate Kim Su-hang’s (金壽恒) tour of Mount Chilbo(七寶山) in Hamgyeong Province. In August of that year, Kim Su-hang served as the chief examiner(試官) for the civil and military examinations held in Gyeongju(吉州). During his tenure, he met with fellow officials—Hong Seokgwi(洪錫龜), Min Jeongjung(閔鼎重), and Jo Seong-bo(趙聖輔)—who were regional administrators at the time, in Seongjin(城津). After the completion of his official duties, Kim Su-hang and his companions toured Mount Chilbo(七寶山) in nearby Myeongcheon(明川), capturing their impressions about Mount Chilbo in poetry. Kim Su-hang and his companions engaged in si-mun su-chang by composing poems with shared rhymes and exchanging them, which allowed them to build a shared emotional response to the scenic spots. These interactions were reflected in paintings by the artist Han Si-gak(韓時覺), resulting in a comprehensive literary and artistic work. This study analyzes the complementary structure of the poetry and paintings in the Bukgwan Suchangrok, focusing on the political background of the participants and the intent behind the compilation. It reveals that the Bukgwan Suchangrok was created based on a sense of familial duty to commemorate and share the political hardships experienced by their forebears, such as their fathers or grandfathers. The work not only captures the personal and political sentiments of its creators but also serves as a literary and cultural testament to their shared heritage. Although the poetry in the Bukgwan Suchangrok primarily fosters emotional consensus among participants rather than providing detailed depictions of landscapes or events, the creation of this tour and poetry album appears to have set a cultural precedent. It is believed to have renewed interest in Hamgyeong Province among central literati. Beyond its literary achievements, the cultural significance of the Bukgwan Suchangrok warrants further reevaluation.
