Abstract

This study examines the patterns of cultural distortion that emerge in the AI-based translation process of Arang folktales included in the Compendium of Korean Oral Literature. To this end, the original orally narrated versions were first converted into standard Korean using AI, and subsequently translated into English. Through these two stages of transformation, various forms of cultural distortion were identified. The AI-based standardization process improved readability by deleting or reducing key features of orality—such as additive structures, elaborate and digressive styles, and utterances presupposing listener response—but in doing so, it flattened crucial elements that shape narrative depth and interpretive context. As a result, the discourse structure and meaning embedded in the oral text were restructured around written-language norms, revealing the first layer of cultural distortion. In particular, the normative positionality of upper-class women was erased, making class, chastity codes, and sensory responses invisible in the narrative. The sociocultural background was reduced to chronological markers, while the hierarchical intersection of class and gender—originally voiced through the speech of lower-class male officials—was reinterpreted as a matter of individual concern, thereby simplifying the intersecting structure of status and gender. During English translation, the term gyujung cheonyeo (“a cloistered maiden”) was rendered as sheltered maiden, thereby omitting the Confucian gender norms and class-bound domestic restrictions embedded in the original expression. As a result, the sociocultural structure and narrative meaning network of Korean classical storytelling were not adequately reflected. Arang's narrative position was replaced by a Western literary stereotype, ultimately failing to convey the tale’s ghost-narrative aesthetics and significance. Moreover, the repeated motif of the magistrate’s death—originally framed as the inevitable consequence for failing to respond to the voice of the silenced—was translated as mysteriously died, refiguring it as a bizarre and inexplicable event. This eliminated the ethical logic and causality embedded in the original, transforming the wonhon (vengeful spirit) from a symbol of injustice to a figure of fear, and rendering the discursive and aesthetic layers of the ghost narrative invisible. Ultimately, while the AI-based translation succeeded in structurally organizing the plot, it revealed clear limitations in faithfully reproducing the cultural meaning structures inherent in the Arang folktale.
