청년 니트(NEET)의 고독과 성장경험에 대한 일의 교육적 의미 탐색

본 연구는 공백과 고립의 시간으로 여겨져 온 니트 기간이 가지는 성장의 힘에 관심을 가지고 일의 교육학적 관점에서 그 의미와 특성을 드러내고자 하였다. 연구참여자는 최근 3년 이내에 재학이나 근로 상태가 아니면서, 직업을 구하기 위한 직무훈련을 받지 않는 무업(無業) 기간을 6개월 이상 경험한 만 19세에서 34세 사이의 청년 니트(NEET) 7명이다. 연구방법은 대면 심층면담으로 이루어졌고, MAXQDA를 활용하여 분석하였으며 니트 경험을 고독-성찰-성숙의 단계로 나누어 살펴보았다. 연구 결과 첫째, 처음 니트가 되었을 때 청년들은 사회가 정해놓은 일, 교육, 훈련의 범주에서 벗어나 스스로를 실패자이자 낙오자로 인식하여 우울함과 무력감을 경험했다. 또한 자신을 하나로 정의하지 못하는 정체성의 혼란과 소속감의 부재로 인해 끝없는 터널에 있는 것과 같은 불안과 고독의 시간을 보내야했다. 둘째, 고립과 소외의 시간으로 보인 니트기간 동안 청년들은 자신을 성찰하고 다양한 삶을 탐색하며 주체적 존재로 성장하고 있었다. 이들은 다양한 자기계발 프로그램에 참여하고 온라인 세계에서 자신을 표현하며 내가 어떤 사람인지를 탐색했다. 셋째, 고독과 성찰의 시간을 거친 니트들은 사회가 아닌 자신이 스스로 삶의 방향을 설정하는 주체적 행위자로 성장했다. 이들의 현재와 미래는 여전히 알 수 없지만, 청년들은 더 이상 자신의 상황을 불안해하지 않게 되었다. 성숙의 단계에 진입한 니트들은 자신을 있는 그대로 받아들이고 긍정적 시선으로 삶을 대할 수 있게 되었다. 나아가 연구 참여자는 노동․경제적 관점에서 벗어나 우리 사회의 맥락에 맞는 한국형 니트를 새로이 정의하고, 니트가 가진 잠재력과 긍정적 힘을 바탕으로 이들을 긍정적으로 바라볼 수 있는 연구가 수행될 것을 제언하였다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore the meaning and attributes of the growth potential inherented in the NEET period, often regarded as a time of emptiness and isolation, from an educational perspective. The participants in this study consisted of seven youths aged between 19 and 34 who have experienced a NEET period lasting more than six months within the past three years. The research employed face-to-face in-depth interviews and utilized MAXQDA analysis software to examine NEET experience in stages of solitude, reflection, and maturity. The research findings are as follows: Firstly, NEET youth perceived themselves as failures and dropouts, experiencinf feelings of depression and helplessness. Additionally, due to the confusion of identity and the absences of a sense of belonging, they had to endure periods of anxiety and loneliness. Secondly, during times of solitude, NEET youth immersed in self-reflection and explored various aspects of life, growing into proactive beings. Thirdly, after going through periods of solitude and introspection, NEET evolved as proactive agents who set their own life directions, rather than being determined by societal norms. The researcher recommended conducting a study to redefine NEET within the context of our society and focus on their inherent potential and possibilities.
