Abstract

The year 1602 (35th year of King Seonjo’s reign) marked a period of intense efforts toward the comprehensive reconstruction of Joseon following the Imjin War. During this time, the envoys sent to host Ming emissaries, under the pretext of honoring their contributions to Joseon’s recovery, were of an unprecedentedly distinguished caliber. Renowned literati such as Wolsa(月沙) Yi Jeong-gwi(李廷龜), Obong(五峯) Yi Ho-min(李好閔), Dongak(東岳) Yi An-nul(李安訥), and Jibong(芝峯) Yi Su-gwang(李睟光) were dispatched for this purpose, accompanied by Jesulgwan(製述官) known for their exceptional literary and poetic talents. Among these figures was Hucheon(后泉) So Gwang-jin(蘇光震). Scholarly research on Hucheon(後泉) So Gwang-jin(蘇光震) remains signifi- cantly limited. However, his importance has been highlighted recently as part of a regional studies project in Iksan(益山), Jeollabuk-do(全羅北道), which introduced his works during a symposium on Iksan studies. As the grandson of Yanggok(梁谷) So Se-yang(蘇世讓), Hucheon(後泉) So Gwang-jin(蘇光震) served as a Jesulgwan(製述官) tasked with accompanying the Ming envoys, Zheng Tianjun(顧天埈) and Cui Tingjian(崔廷健), sent to Joseon in 1602 to announce the establishment of the Crown Prince. This follows a family tradition of diplomatic and literary excellence, as his grandfather also served a similar role in 1521, accompanying Ming envoys during Emperor Jiajing's(嘉靖帝) ascension proclamation. This study examines Hucheon(後泉) So Gwang-jin’s(蘇光震) life and achievements as a competent official, scholar, and self-proclaimed poet during the reigns of King Seonjo(宣祖) and King Gwanghae(光海君), using his collection Hucheon Yugo(後泉遺稿) as the primary source. Among the 79 chapters and 295 poems he left behind, this paper focuses on the diplomatic sensibilities and insights reflected in his poetry. One notable finding clarifies that the poetic exchanges with the Ming envoys, mistakenly included in the Yeonhaengnok Jeonjip(燕行錄全集) as part of the 1608 diplomatic mission, were in fact written during his service as a Jesulgwan(製述官) in 1602.
