Abstract

The purpose of this study was to verify the difference aerobic and anaerobic capacity as well as isokinetic muscular functions according to a polymorphism of the angiotensin I-converting enzyme(ACE). This study was also investigated to provide better methods for athletic performance improving and elite athlete selecting of judo player. Total 69 healthy judo players were recruited in this study. Genotyping was performed by polymerase chain reaction and/or restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. The athletes were categorized into 3 groups as II, ID, DD genotype groups based upon ACE I/D polymorphism(n=69; II=30, ID=26, DD=13). This groups were measured aerobic capacity testing, maximal incremental cycle ergometer testing, and maximal knee muscle strength measurements. Aerobic fitness indicated higher value in II genotype than ID or DD. However, anaerobic performance did not differ significantly between anaerobic fitness and the genotype. Isokinetic testing was significantly difference in right knee flexion peak torque, peak power and average power in DD genotype than II or ID. These findings suggest that aerobic capacity was probably affected by II genotype of ACE gene. In addition, anaerobic capacity indicated that DD genotype of ACE gene dominated over other genotype. However, there were no significant differences between ACE genotype. We need further studies for an accurate comparison of various event according to ACE I/D polymorphism.
