공수도(空手道) 신화: 문헌 고증과 계보학을 바탕으로

현대의 대표적 맨손 무술 중의 하나인 ‘공수도(空手道)’는 그 기원과 정체가 여러 겹의 근거 없는신화 속에 빠져있다. 그래서 아직까지도 많은 연구가들과 실제 수련자들은 공수도 신화 속에서 길을 잃고 헤매고 있다. 아직까지, 상식적으로, 혹은 학계의 일반적 이해 속에서, 공수도는 일본 본토의 침략애 맞서기 위해, 무장해제 된 유구국(琉球國) 민중들의 영웅적이고 의로운 투쟁의 과정에서생겨난 것이고, 이후 일본 본토로 수입되어 오늘에 이르게 됐다는 거짓된 믿음이 지배적이다. 그러나 ‘믿음’과 ‘사실’은 철저히 별개라는 것이 냉정한 진실이다. 본 논문은 공수도가 그런 신파적 영웅담과는 관련이 없음을 밝히고자 한다. 그리고 이런 목적을 달성하기 위해 관련된 실제 역사적 문헌들을 고증하고, 더 나아가 공수도의 형성과 변천과정을 실제 역사적 사실들의 계보를 추적하는 방식으로 밝혀내고 있다.
Abstract
The origin and identity of Karatedo, one of the most representative bare-handed martial arts of today, is mired in several layers of myths. Therefore, many researchers and actual trainees are still lost and wandering in the myths of Karatedo. In common sense or in the general understanding of academia, false beliefs about Karatedo still dominate as follows; Karatedo was created in the process of a heroic and righteous struggle by the disarmed Ryukyu people to fight the invasion of mainland Japan, and after that it has been imported into mainland Japan, leading to the current Karatedo. However, it is a cold truth that 'belief' and 'fact' are completely separate. The purpose of this paper is to clarify that Karatedo is not related to such a dramatic heroic story. And, in order to achieve this purpose, this paper ascertains the relevant actual historical documents and further reveals the formation and transition process of Karatedo in a way that traces the genealogy of actual historical facts.
