Abstract
This paper examines the characteristics of trading volume and the relation between firm and market volume using 887 firms listed on the KRX between January 1, 1996 and December 31, 2007. Furthur, we focus on the contribution of various characteristics to the sensitivity of trading volume. This paper is, to the best of our knowledge, the first attempt to explore the trading volume betas and their determinants in Korea. To show the relation between individual firm trading activity and market activity, we use a common market model framework. The null hypothesis under market model is α=0 and β=1. We find that 307 firms among 887 firms have estimates of α, which are significantly different from the null hypothesis at the 5% level. In particular, 738 firms among 887 firmshave β estimates that are significantly different from one at the 5% level. A significantly positive β indicates that individual firm trading is positively related to activity in the market and that individual firm trading does vary with market-wide trading. Next, to illustrate the contribution of the various characteristics to anomalous trading, we run panel analysis of the trading volume beta on the firm characteristics using the whole sample of firms and separate subsamples of firms. The dependent variable is the absolute value of the trading volume beta using a time-series regression for each firm. The independent variables are the uninformed trading which is measured by the individual trading volume for each stock scaled by the average individual trading volume across all stocks, the trading volume, the market beta, and the market capitalization. We also include two dummy variables, KOSPI200 and Option. KOSPI200 is a dummy variable with the value of 1 if the firm is included in the KOSPI200, or 0 otherwise. Option is a dummy variable with the value of 1 if the firm has a listed option, or 0 otherwise. The evidence shows that firms that have higher trading beta are predominantly firms with high uninformed trading, firms that do not have listed options, firms with small capitalization, and firms with the higher market beta. The ontribution of high uninformed trading on trading beta is more likely due to individual investors and is consist with the common characterization of individual investors as traders who have heterogeneous information and different reactions to information.
