이 글은 웹소설 장르 형성과 재생산에서 웹 매체/플랫폼이 어떤 역할을 맡았는지 그 양상을 살피는 것을 목적으로 한다. 장르가 형성되고 재생산되기 위해서는, 장르에 대한 인식, 장르 컨벤션, 그리고 해당 장르의 작가/독자로 자신의 정체성을 규정하는 향유 주체, 플랫폼이나 출판사처럼 자신들이 유통하는 작품을 장르로 구획하는 매체 등의 조건이 필요하다. 작가, 독자, 그리고 플랫폼 매체는 입체적인 상호작용을 통해 이러한 장르 인식과 컨벤션이 형성, 재생산되는 데 각각 중요한 역할을 하였다. 웹소설 플랫폼은 메뉴 구성과 및 게시판/댓글 기능 제공을 통해 작가와 독자가 양방향으로, 다중적으로 소통할 수 있는 환경을 제공하였고, 이를 통해 웹소설 장르가 다른 양식/장르들로부터 독립성을 확보하게 되는 과정에 기여하였다. 웹소설 장르가 형성되는 2010년대 초반의 플랫폼 중 <문피아>와 <조아라>는 당시 10년 이상 운영되었기 때문에, 인터넷 커뮤니티의 성격을 강하게 유지하고 있었다. 커뮤니티로서 활성화된 게시판을 통해 웹소설 장르의 컨벤션에 대한 논의 및 웹소설 하위 장르에 대한 논의가 입체적으로 이루어질 수 있었으며, 이는 웹소설 장르 및 하위 장르에 대한 인식, 컨벤션이 작가와 독자에게 폭넓게 공유될 수 있는 조건으로 작동하였다.
Abstract
This article aims to explore the role of web media/platforms in the formation and reproduction of the web novel genre. For a genre to form and be reproduced, certain conditions are necessary: awareness of the genre, genre conventions, enjoyers that define their identity as authors/readers of the genre, and media like platforms or publishers that categorize the works they distribute into genres. Authors, readers, and platform media play important roles in shaping and reproducing this genre awareness and conventions through a complex interplay of interactions. Among these, web novel platforms have provided an environment for authors and readers to communicate bidirectionally and multiplicatively through menu structures and the provision of bulletin board/comment functions, contributing to the process by which the web novel genre secures independence from other forms/genres. Platforms like Munpia and Joara, which were operating for over ten years in the early 2010s, strongly embodied the characteristics of internet communities. Through these bulletin boards, discussions about genre conventions and sub-genres of web novels could take place in a multi-dimensional manner, serving as a condition for the broad sharing of awareness and conventions regarding the web novel genre and its sub-genres among authors and readers.
