MTAR(momentum threshold autoregressive)모형을 적용한 경우 모든 지수는 유가와 장기균형관계가 존재하는 것으로 나타났다.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate an asymmetric effect of oil price on stock index returns in the KOSPI market. To do this, we adopt an asymmetric error correction model by applying the MTAR(momentum threshold autoregressive) model proposed by Enders and Siklos(2001). This study use the weekly KOSPI index, large-cap index, medium-cap index and small-cap index and WTI index. The sample period are from January 6, 2001 to December 13, 2018. We find that we cannot reject the null hypothesis of no cointegration from the conventional Johansen cointegration approach. However, the estimation results of KOSPI and large-cap indices from the DOLS cointegration method with considering the structural breaks show a long-run relationship with WTI, implying that ignoring the presence of structural breaks leads to spurious results. In addition, the results from the threshold error correction model revealed that four stock index returns react to the changes in oil price only in deviation from the long-run equilibrium above a threshold value. Turning to the short-run relationship, the results show that the changes in oil price influence four stock index returns positively. These results are robust either when we incorporate the Won/Dollar exchange rate and interest rate, or when we adopt the EC-(E)GARCH-M model to consider the possible heteroskedasticity. Finally, we utilize the 22 sectoral indices for examining the asymmetric effect of oil price and find the similar results with the previous tests.
