본고는 한국에서 발생하여 특징을 형성하고 있는 웹소설을 학술적으로 논의하기 위한 필요조건들을 검토하고자 하는데 그 의미가 있다. 특히 이전까지의 웹소설 관련 담론이 상업적인 가치나 장르문학과의 연관성, 혹은 기존의 문단문학으로 대표되는 소설문학과의 차이점을 통해 의미를 획득하던 방법에서 벗어나 웹소설 자체의 특징을 논리적으로 정의해 보고자 한다. 이를 위해 웹소설의 역사적이고 사회적인 맥락들을 살펴보고, 그동안 명확한 정보를 통해 증명된 것이 아닌 오해와 편견으로 왜곡되었던 지점들을 확인하고 이를 수정하는 작업들을 진행하였다. 또한 웹소설을 학술적으로 정의할 수 있는가에 대한 가치의 문제들을 점검해 보고, 학술분류체계 내에서의 위치 및 이후의 학술적 논의의 전개를 위한 필요지점들 역시 모색하였다. 특히 웹소설과 장르의 문제는 극복해야 하는 과제임에도 불구하고 장르문학에 대한 학술적 논의들 역시 학술적으로 본격적인 전개되지 못하고 있기 때문에 좀 더 넓은 범위에서의 변화의 필요성 역시 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 논의들을 통해 결국 웹소설을 학술적으로 정의하는 일은 단순히 새롭게 등장한 서사의 형식에 대한 학술적 논의에서 그치지 않고, 21세기 한국의 대중문화콘텐츠 전반을 학술적으로 논하기 위한 맥락 안에 자리하고 있다는 것을 확인하고 그에 대한 필요성을 역설하였다.
Abstract
The significance of this study is to review the requirements for academically discussing web novels that are forming the characteristics after occurring in Korea. Especially, this study aims to logically define the characteristics of web novel itself after getting out of the existing method for web novel-related discourse to acquire the meanings through its commercial value, relationship with genre literature, or novel literature represented as the existing literary world literature. For this, this study examined the historical and social contexts of web novel, and then verified and modified the distorted points by misunderstanding and prejudices instead of something that was proved by definite information. Also, this study examined the issues of value related to if the web novel could be academically defined, and then sought for the position within the academic classification system and the necessities for developing academic discussions afterwards. Especially, even though the issue of web novel and genre was the task that should be overcome, the academic discussions of genre literature had not been fully developed, so it would be necessary to have some changes in the wider range. Through such discussions, this study eventually verified that academically defining web novel would not be just academic discussion of the newly-appearing narrative form, but be located in the context for academically discussing the overall Korean popular cultural content in the 21st century, and then emphasized its necessity.
