Abstract

In Yu Manju's diary Heumyoung, there are records of various reading activities, along with several titles planned for compilation based on his reading. Among the things Yu Manju devoted his life to was the planning work related to the compilation of Chinese collection of books. At the core of this general series project Chinese collection of books was the reading of Chinese general series works. Yu Manju, who pursued extensive learning, recognized the value of historical writings and general series as resources for scholarship and took them as his reading subjects. However, the reading records of Chinese general series have not received much attention in the existing studies of Heumyoung. For this reason, Chapter 2 will consider 4 reading records of Gujin ShuoHai (古今說海), Shuo Ling (說鈴), Siku Quanshu (四庫全書), and Han Wei Congshu (漢魏叢書), to help elucidate Yu Manju’s thought process during his reading activities. However, prior studies on Heumyoung have largely omitted the titles of books included in the Chinese compiled series, which means that Yu Manju’s actual reading and the points at which his knowledge was formed have not been adequately illuminated. As a result, in Chapter 3, the manuscript will indicate and fix several incorrect reading records that occurred during previous research, and equally importantly, stress and illustrate the reason why the actual name of the texts that were compiled has to be mentioned. Chapter 4 explores the idea that these concepts of reading Chinese general series and planning general series projects were not just Yu Manju's dreams, but also a shared atmosphere and intellectual landscape among the intellectuals of his time. Although research on the reading of Chinese general series is still in its early stages, there is cautious hope that further developments will explore the connections between the fields of general series reading and the aggregation of general series as a form of knowledge.
