Abstract
This study aimed to comprehensively examine the structural relationships among competitive rumination, exercise stress, and depression as perceived by high school Taekwondo athletes. A total of 355 high school Taekwondo athletes (251 males and 104 females) participated in the survey. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and structural equation modeling. The results revealed that competitive rumination had a positive effect on all three sub-factors of exercise stress. Among these, exercise stress and coach-related stress significantly predicted depression. Furthermore, competitive rumination was found to directly influence depression. These findings suggest that ruminative thoughts about competitive situations elevate athletes’ stress levels, which in turn contribute to increased depressive symptoms. This study provides foundational data for understanding and preventing emotional distress in adolescent elite athletes and emphasizes the need to develop psychological intervention programs aimed at regulating competitive rumination.
