Abstract
This article contests the idea of early childhood education as first and foremost a locus for instrumental and technical practices. An instrumental practice seeking the best methods and procedures for delivering predetermined outcomes-a stable, defined and transmittable body of knowledge, but also implicitly a particular subject-today the flexible, autonomous and entrepreneurial child. By exploring the institution as a locus for ethical and political practice the early childhood institution is instead imagined as a public space. A public space where children and adults, as citizens, can participate in a public discourse and in projects of cultural, economical and social value. Transgressing a contractual mode of ethics based on universal principles and categories the article explores Emanuelle Levins’ thought on and ethics of an encounter and Jacques Derrida’s thoughts on hospitality and welcoming as well as Gilles Deleuze’s thought on experimentation and minority politics.
