Abstract

The purpose of this study was to reconsider the value of early childhood art education by critically reviewing and synthesizing the findings from current research on art education in early childhood. Studies on the importance of art education, classroom practices of art education in early childhood, and the value of teacher’s roles were reviewed. Study findings indicated that art education involves both cognition and affect and has more educational value than normally thought of. Most of the art activities observed in classrooms are related to art production, and teachers in many early childhood classrooms either provide children with freedom to explore art materials with little guidance or give them prescribed direct instructions to follow. Art educators stress the importance of teacher guidance in early childhood art education and suggest that children need to learn to appreciate artwork as well as to produce it. More empirical research on how to enhance children’s artistic development in terms of both art production and art appreciation is needed.
