본 논문은 미켈란젤로 안토니오니가 영화에서 사용한 다양한 대안적 연출 방식 중 '모호성'에 대해 연구한다. 이를 시각적, 서사적, 심리적 그리고 상징과 은유의 모호함에 기반하여 설명하고자 한다. 그는 할리우드의고전적 문법을 고수하는 감독들과 달리 대안적인 영화제작 방식을 통해 영화 표현의 영역을 확장하는 선구적인 역할을 담당하고 있다. 미켈란젤로 안토니오니의 영화에서 나타나는 모호함은 그의 영화에서 반복적으로나타나는 표현 방식이다. 영화의 모호함은 관객으로 하여금 해석에 적극적으로 참여하게 하고, 영화가 지닌 다양한 의미 중 하나를 선택하게 만든다. 안토니오니 역시 모호하고 불분명한 표현으로 답이 없는 질문을 던지며관객의 자유로운 해석을 유도한다.
Abstract
This thesis studies 'Ambiguity' among the various alternative directing methods used by Michelangelo Antonioni in his films. I would like to explain this by dividing it into visual ambiguity, narrative ambiguity, psychological ambiguity, and symbol and metaphor ambiguity. Unlike directors who adhere to the classical grammar of Hollywood, he plays a pioneering role in expanding the scope of film expression through alternative filmmaking methods. The ambiguity shown in Michelangelo Antonioni's films is a method of expression repeatedly seen in his films. Ambiguity in a movie makes the audience actively participate in its interpretation and choose one among the vari- ous meanings it has. Antonioni also asks unanswered questions with ambiguous and unclear ex- pressions, leading the audience to make free interpretations.
