Abstract
This study examines the interaction between the body and space through Laban Movement Analysis (LMA) and explores its application as a choreographic methodology. Traditionally, space has been perceived as a passive background in performance; however, this research approaches space as an active component that is shaped through bodily engagement and movement. To analyze this dynamic relationship, the study applies LMA’s Effort and Choreutics concepts alongside Yi-Fu Tuan’s theory of space and place, investigating how spatial meaning emerges and transforms through movement. Focusing on the performance project every évry, this study explores how fixed architectural struc- tures can be deconstructed and reinterpreted through movement, positioning space as a generative material in choreography. The findings indicate that space is not merely occupied but actively re- shaped through movement, and that LMA provides a structured framework for analyzing and integrat- ing spatial dynamics into performance creation. Moreover, the study highlights LMA’s role as a com- municative and analytical tool in collaborative choreography, facilitating the organization and inter- pretation of movement in relation to space. While this research primarily examines the Effort and Space components of LMA within a specific architectural setting, future studies should expand its application to diverse environments and in- corporate Body and Shape elements. Despite its scope, this study contributes to choreographic dis- course by proposing a methodological framework that integrates space as a dynamic and interactive component in performance, thereby broadening the theoretical and practical understanding of spatial engagement in choreography.
