본 논문은 루돌프 라반(Rudolf Laban, 1879-1958) 움직임 이론의 원천으로 고려되는‘움직임 공간’의 안무학적 특성과 이것의 의미를 밝히는 것에 목적을 둔다. 신체와 공간의 상호작용으로 생성되는 움직임 공간은 라반이 움직임의 본질에 접근하기 위해 천착했던 핵심적인 주제이다. 라반은 움직임 공간을 연구하는데 관념적이거나 형이상학적 차원에 머무르지 않고 경험적(experiential)이고 과학적으로 접근한다. 즉 인간 행위로서 무용의 다각적 관점을 제공하는 기하학, 심리학 및 조형예술과 음악이론을 통해 학문적으로 접근했을 뿐 아니라 실제 무용 현장 및 일상생활에서 나타나는 인간 움직임을 관찰하고 채취하여 이론의 근거로 삼았다. 이처럼 움직임 연구의 실제와 이론적 측면을 통합적으로 접근하는 것을 안무학적 연구라고 하며 라반의 움직임 이론은 이러한 안무학적 관점에서 조명될 수 있다. 최근 무용의 연구에서는 라반의 이론을 근거로 체계화된 연구 도구로써 라반 움직임 분석(Laban Movement Analysis, LMA), 라바노테이션(Labanotation) 등이 교육, 안무, 무용치료 및 공학에 이르기까지 폭넓게 적용되고 있으나, 라반의 이론을 다양한 시각에서 재조명하거나 이론의 원천 및 본질에 대한 접근은 부족하다고 할 수 있다. 과거에 구축된 라반의 이론으로 동시대의 무용을 읽어내고 움직임 탐구에 보다 본질적으로 접근하기 위해서는 라반의 사유를 관통하는 움직임 공간에 대한 이해가 필수적이라고 할 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 안무학적 관점을 통해 라반의 ‘공간조화(Space Harmony)’ 이론의 학문적 배경과 주요 개념을 고찰하여 그의 이론의 핵심을 이루는 움직임 공간에 대해 살펴보고자 했다. 연구의 방법은 문헌 연구이며, 안무학적 분석방법을 적용하여 공간조화 이론을 재구성하고 구성요소들을 구조와 특질로 분류했다. 그리고 이를 종합적으로 논의하여 다음과 같이 움직임 공간의 안무학적 특성 네 가지를 발견했다. 첫째, 움직임 공간의 결정체(Crystalline form)로부터 비롯되는 기하학적 특성, 둘째, 움직임이 공간상에 남기는 흔적 형태에서 나타나는 조형적 특성, 셋째, 움직임의 에포트와 공간적 긴장에 근거한 역동적 특성, 마지막으로 움직임 구성 요소의 조화로운 관계에서 나타나는 상호관계적 특성이다. 본 연구의 결과에 비춰봤을 때, 움직임 공간에 관한 안무학적 연구는 무용의 핵심 매체인 움직임의 본질적인 논의를 가능하게 할 뿐 아니라, 무용연구에 보다 구체적이고 과학적인 이론적 배경을 제공한다. 또한, 안무학에서는 예술로서의 무용 뿐 아니라 일반적인 움직임까지 폭 넓게 다루어지므로 움직임을 주제로 하는 다양한 학문의 영역에서 체계적인 움직임 연구의 관점을 제공할 것이다. 본 연구가 무용의 과학적 연구를 위한 유용한 틀을 제공하고, 나아가 타학문 및 예술의 영역에서도 움직임과 공간에 관한 연구에 유의미하게 활용될 수 있기를 기대한다.
Abstract
This paper aims at examining the properties of‘movement space’ that is considered as the fundamental of the Laban’s movement theory. Movement space created from the interaction between the body and space is the core subject in Laban’s research to approach the movement fundamentals. Laban researched movement space in a concrete way rather than with metaphysical approach. He also took everyday movement as the source of his theory rather than artistically refined movement, and this suggests that his choreological research focused on the field study. Choreology is a whole knowledge of movement which is structure, principles and patterns of movement through scientific and logical way. Through his research, Laban discovered the fundamentals and the laws of movement space and developed these to the theory of space harmony as choreological approach. Thus, in this research, I examined Laban’s movement space in consideration of the academic background of the space harmony theory as choreologial perspective and found four choreological properties of movement space as in the following: 1) a geometric property from Crystalline form: 2) a plastic property from movement trace in space: 3) a dynamic property based on movement Effort and Spatial tension: and 4) an interactive property from the harmonious relationship between movement elements. In conclusion, the choreological research in dance makes it possible to have a substantial discussion about movement, which is the main object of dance, and provides a main theory in dance practice and research. I hope this research suggests a useful framework in the analysis of movement and choreography in dance and can be further used in other academic fields and art genres where the analysis of movement and space is necessary.
