Abstract
Korean women’s films have continuously developed by reflecting the changes in society and showcasing the transformation of women’s identities. While early women’s films mainly focused on narratives of resist- ance to and overcoming patriarchal oppression, contemporary women’s films have expanded to explore themes such as solidarity among women, individuality, and the complexities of human relationships. This study aims to analyze these thematic changes in Korean women’s films and propose ways to apply these in- sights to film production education. As a case study, this research analyzes the films selected for the Seoul International Women's Film Festival, with a particular focus on Two Women Wearing the Same Underwear. The Seoul International Women’s Film Festival plays a significant role in presenting the major discourses in Korean women’s films in a quantitative manner. Since the festival selects the most meaningful works of the year, it offers a val- uable opportunity to analyze the thematic changes in women’s films. Based on this analysis, Two Women Wearing the Same Underwear critiques the roles imposed by traditional family structures and deconstructs the idealized image of motherhood, thereby expressing the complex and human aspects of modern women. This film serves as a useful case for teaching students how to incorporate character development, narrative structure, and social discourse into their films. This study explores how women’s films embody contemporary feminist discourses through symbolic and visual narrative techniques, and how they convey social messages. By examining the thematic evolution of women’s films, the study suggests ways to guide film production education towards creating modern, so- cially critical films. Korean women’s films, as important cultural texts that reflect and reinterpret social changes, will provide students with valuable learning materials to reflect on the present era and foster crea- tivity and critical thinking.
