봉준호 영화 속 여성 표현에 관한 연구: <기생충>(2019)에 대한 성평등 테스트 적용과 캐릭터 분석을 중심으로

2010년대 중반부터 성인지, 성평등이 영화계의 중요 이슈 중 하나로 떠올랐다. 여성성을 중심으로 한 젠더 이슈는 성평등 의식 강화, 성인지 감수성 제고 같은 긍정적인 변화를 이끌어내고 있음에도 불구하고 생산적인 토론과 연구보다는 노골적인 지지와 비판이 충돌하면서 빈번히 갈등을 유발했다. 젠더 관점에서 사회 문화적 대립 양상을 완화할 방법론 중 하나로 봉준호 영화 속의 여성 캐릭터의 서사적 기여와 재현 방식을 탐색하는 것이 본 연구의 시작점이다. 본 연구는 <기생충>을 젠더 관점에서 복합적으로 조망한다. 벡델-월리스 테스트를 비롯한 성평등 테스트 및 역할, 대사 등을 분석해 통해 영화 속에서 여성 캐릭터가 어떤 형태로 표현되고 있는 지 살펴본다. 이는 <기생충>의 여성성 표현이 한국 주류 영화가 가지고 있던 젠더 관점의 문제점을 극복하고, 세계적으로 흥행과 비평 양측면에서 성과를 거두는 데 일조할 수 있었음을 직간접적으로 증명하려는 방법론이다.
Abstract
Since the mid-2010s, gender awareness and gender equality have emerged as important issues in the film industry. Despite the fact that gender issues centered on femininity have led to positive changes such as enhanced awareness of gender equality and gender sensitivity, they have also triggered conflicts with outright support and criticism rather than productive discussion and research. This study aims to explore the narrative contributions and representations of female characters in Bong Joon-ho's film as a way to mitigate socio-cultural conflicts from a gender perspective. This study comprehensively examines Parasite from a gender perspective. Through the analysis of roles, lines, including the Bechdel-Wallace test, it examines how female characters are represented in the film. This methodology directly and indirectly proves that the representation of femininity in Parasite was able to overcome the problematic gender perspective of mainstream Korean cinema and contribute to its success in terms of both box office and critical reception worldwide.
