Abstract
If Christianity has contributed to the formation of capitalism as Max Weber said, then Buddhism can now present an alternative to resolving the problems of pariah capitalism that Weber also spoke of. Whereas existing market capitalism depends more on law than on ethics, Buddhism on the other hand, through Buddhist economic ethics, tries to alleviate human suffering arising from the problems of the market and wealth. Buddhist economic ethics are composed of specific standards and theories of economic ethics that are based on the belief that “people are beings that pursue happiness, and when they have understood the concept of interdependence (pratityasamutpada), they cannot but follow the ethics of Buddhist economics.”Buddhist economic ethics can be systematized and explained with eight principles. First, individuals must not maximize their utilities. Instead, their economic actions are based on dharma. Second, corporations must not maximize profit but also be in a state of naturalness where they are pursuing actions benefiting themselves as well as consumers and the society but are not conscious of what they are pursuing. Third, all economic decision-making and actions of producers and consumers must be carried out in a state of right mindfulness. Fourth, all economic thoughts and actions of producers and consumers must be based on the right view of wealth and the market. Fifth, all economic subjects must perceive the interdependence of economic relations and pursue ethics of mercy and actions that benefit both themselves and others. Sixth, all economic actions must be based on an economic ethics of selflessness that can be characterized by selfless possession and selfless competition. Seventh, all economic actions must be appropriate to the situation and properly balanced. Eighth, all economic actions regarding production, consumption, possession, and indebtedness must be based on the ethics of moderation for oneself and others.
