Abstract

The global economic crisis that occurred in 2008 caused the public to become skeptical of market capitalism, but sufficient measures to address deficiencies in the system have not yet been taken. A kind of Buddhist capitalism called as Dependent Co-arising Capitalism (or Pratītyasamutpāda Capitalism), an innovative philosophical concept and economic structure which can basically replace market capitalism, will be introduced in this paper. The presumption that maximum utility pursued by consumers and maximum profit sought by producers will result in the efficient allocation of resources guided by Smith’s “invisible hand” is based on the mistaken belief that market capitalism can achieve market efficiency despite the selfishness and greed of people. Dependent Co-arising Capitalism emphasizes that people's suffering stems from their selfishness, and their desire for money and material things and thus, society cannot be changed unless people are not changed. A system of Buddhist economic ethics will be necessary for coping with the complex, intertwining conflicts among people over possessions, and Dependent Co-arising Capitalism can provide solutions to the problems market capitalism breeds. Dependent Co-arising Capitalism is a theory presenting a multi-faceted view of how consumers and producers perceive problems and how they act in solving them and responding to changes within the organizing framework of fair and compassionate market, government and state. In other words, Dependent Co-arising Capitalism is a kind of capitalism that can be compared to Indra’s net, where personal, social, and governmental aspects are seen to be inter-connected. The principles of Dependent Co-arising Capitalism stipulates market actors, roles of government and markets, and workings of Dependent Co-arising Capitalism. It embodies unusual presumptions, perspectives and philosophical views; in this form of capitalism, the Buddhist economic community organizes aspects of life, assets, people, society and nature together in pursuit of the Buddhist paradise(pure land).
