탄허학으로 조명한 4·19혁명의 세계사적 의의

불교뿐만 아니라 동양사상 전반에 해박했던 탄허 스님은 1960년에 일어났던4·19혁명에 대해 특별한 의미를 부여하였다. 『주역』의 문왕팔괘도에 의하면 우리한반도는 艮方에 해당하는데, 4·19혁명은 결실의 방위인 간방의 한국에서 결실의인종인 20대 전후의 청년들이 정권을 붕괴시킨 사건으로, 1960년대에 일어나서 세계를 뒤흔들었던 구미 학생운동의 출발점이 되었다는 것이다. 탄허 스님의 이러한易學的 통찰은 『正易』에 근거한 것으로 본고에서는 이런 통찰이 역사학적으로도타당할 수 있는지 입증하고자 하였다. 필자는 ‘저항문화운동’이라고 불리는 미국 학생운동의 주역 가운데 토머스 헤이든과 잭 뉴필드의 회고담에서 그런 증거를 찾을 수 있었다. 토머스 헤이든은 광주민주화운동 30주년 기념행사에서 연설하면서 “나는 우리와 같은 또래의 젊은이들이 독재자 이승만을 끌어내렸다는 소식을 접하고서 기쁨에 들떴다. … 이승만이하야한 후 이틀 지나서 SDS의 첫 번째 회의가 개최되었다.”고 회고한 바 있고, 잭뉴필드는 자신의 회고록에서 “신좌파(New Left)운동에 보다 잠재적으로 영감을준 것들 가운데 하나는 … 한국의 이승만의 반동적인 정권을 타도하면서 1960년에학생들이 담당했던 촉매제의 역할이었다고 생각한다.”고 쓰고 있다. 이뿐만 아니라 뉴욕타임스 등의 미국 언론들은 여러 날에 걸쳐서 한국의 4·19혁명 관련 보도를 1면 톱 기사로 싣고 있었다. 따라서 4·19혁명의 세계적 영향에 대한 탄허 스님의 역학적 통찰은 역사학적으로 보아도 타당하다고 볼 수 있다.
Abstract
Venerable Tanheo, who was well versed not only in Buddhism but also in other Eastern thoughts, gave special meaning to the 4·19 Revolution. In the Eight Diagrams of King Wen (文王⼋卦), the Korean Peninsula is located in the northeastern region, Gènfāng (艮方). Gèn (艮, ☶) symbolizes fruition, young people, mountain, stopping, starting, morality, etc. The 4·19 Revolution was a historical event in which young people of about twenty, the age of fruition, collapsed the old rotten regime of South Korea. Venerable Tanheo said that the 4·19 Revolution was the starting point of the Counterculture Movement that woke up all the people in the 1960s and shook the world. His insight was based on the philosophy of Jeongyeok (正易). This paper attempted to prove whether such insight is also historically valid. I was able to find such evidence in a retrospective story by Thomas Hayden and Jack Newfield who played lead roles of the American student movement called the Counterculture Movement. Besides, American media, such as 'The New York Times', have published reports on Korea's 4·19 revolution on several fronts over several days. Hence, Tanheo's insight of the global impact of the 4·19 Revolution could be proven historically.
