Abstract
Tenzin Gyatsho, the present 14th Dalai Lama, has bestowed the Kālacakra initiation to several thousands of people for global peace in each of many places in the world. Thus, this grandiose and creative maṇḍala is better known than any other Buddhist maṇḍala now. In Tibetan Buddhism itself, the Kālacakra has been recognized as one of the greatest Buddhist traditions. However, when the Kālacakratantra, the basic Scripture of the Kālacakra, along with the Vimalaprabhā (VP), its detailed commentary, was initially introduced into Buddhist circles in late 10th century or early 11th century, they are supposed to have faced severe criticism by learned Buddhist scholars such as Ratnākaraśānti. On the contrary, Abhayakarāgupta (late 11th century-early 12th century), one of the greatest scholars in the last phased into Budd Buddhism, is supposed to have been responsible for accepting the Kālacakra into great innastic universities such as Nālao ā and Vikramaśīla. He influenced the last phase of Indian Buddhism through his works, particularly by the Vajrāvalī (VA), his magnum opus. He managed to synthesize the diverse ritual heritage in the VA, and, in the course of his synthesis, he included the Kālacakramaṇḍala and itsrelated rituals in his grand ritual system, that is, the Vajrāvalī system. Since the Kālacakramaṇḍala had a completely different symbolism from other Buddhist maṇḍalas, Abhayakarāgupta dealt with it at the end of the VA and the Niṣpannayogāvalī. This article explores how Abhayakarāgupta accepted the Kālacakramaṇḍala into his grand ritual system. It could become embedded in his ritual system and took a significant role in it. However, since Abhayakarāgupta did not prescribe on the significance of this maṇḍala for his ritual system, we do not know exactly how his ritual system is applied to it and its related rituals. Fortunately, through the Śrīkālacakramaṇḍalavidhi of Sādhuputra, which is based on the VP and highly influenced by VA, we can perceive how Abhayakarāgupta’s ritual system was applied to the Kālacakramaṇḍala and its related rituals. The Sanskrit original of this important text was lost, but its Tibetan translation is preserved in the Tibetan Canon. In this text Abhayākaragupta’s ritual system is adopted and transformed by symbolism peculiar to the Kālacakramaṇḍala.
