Abstract
This study focuses on the meaning of Theravāda Buddhism and its historical background. The term of Theravāda means ‘Doctrine of Elders.’ Elders indicate the senior monks who preserve tradition. Theravāda is the school of Buddhism preserves now in Sri Lanka and is parts of continental southeast Asia. It reached to Sri Lanka from India near 250 BC. And in the 11th century, Theravāda Buddhism diffused to Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. Distinctions of Theravāda Buddhism are the use of Pāli as its main sacred language and psychological analysis. Theravāda Buddhists specified that they were Vibbajja-vādin(analysts), and they delighted in classifying psychological states. Moreover, Theravāda monks adhere to the Pāli version of the Pātimokkha with its 227 rules. Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Thailand may be called Buddhist societies in a sense that cannot be applied elsewhere. During a history of the Theravāda Buddhism, Myanmar monks sent a delegation to Sri Lanka to receive the Sri Lanka ordination. And Sri Lanka they also accepted ordination ceremony from Myanmar and Thailand purposely. Therefore, it is clear that Theravādin ordination tradition was toaccept in other countries of its own necessity to re-import it when need arose
