상좌부(Theravāda) 불교와 한국불교 재가불자 역할비교

붓다의 입멸이후 2500여년이 지난 지금, 불교는 크게 세 가지로 분류되었다. 이들은 大乘佛敎, 上座部佛敎 그리고 金剛乘佛敎이다. 본고는 이들 세 가지 불교국가들 가운데 대승불교에 해당하는 한국불교와 스리랑카, 미얀마, 태국, 라오스, 캄보디아에서 진행되는 상좌부불교를 중심으로 재가불자의 역할을 살피고 이들의 특징을 비교하고자 한다. 본고는 크게 네 부분으로 구성되어 있다. 첫 번째로 상좌부불교가 공통적으로 가지고 있는 재가불자의 역할을 ‘보시’, ‘지계’, ‘수행’, ‘그 외의 것’으로 구분하고 이들이 어떻게 진행되었으며 그 안에서 재가자는 어떻게 역할을 하고 있는지를 살펴보는 것이다. 두 번째로 상좌부불교 국가의 근대 역사를 살피고, 국가별로 나타나는 상가와 재가와의 관계에 대한 연구이다. 세 번째는 한국불교 재가불자의 역할을 살피는 것으로 한국불교 역시 상좌부불교의 전통과 마찬가지로 보시, 지계, 수행이 재가불자의 역할로 대두될 수 있었다. 마지막으로 상좌부불교와 한국불교의 재가불자역할을 비교하였다. 역사․환경적배경이 다른 상좌부불교와 한국불교를 비교하기는 난해하지만 결과적으로 상좌부불교 재가불자는 보시, 지계, 수행의 역할에서 보다 활성화 되어있었으며, 사찰의 운영이나 출가와 재가의 관계 그리고 개인적인 참여도 역시 적극적인 것으로 판단되었다. 물론 이러한 비교가 절대적일 수는 없지만, 이들의 관계를 살펴 상좌부불교와 한국불교를 이해하고, 한국불교 재가불자의 역할을 재고하는데 근거가 될 것이다.
Abstract
This study focuses on the comparison of the role of Lay Buddhists between Theravāda Buddhism and Korean Buddhism. Theravāda is the school of Buddhism preserves now in Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. This study focuses how lay Buddhists perform the three types of meritorious deeds[Almsgiving(dāna), Morality(sīla), Mental Development(bhāvanā)] and the role this practice plays in daily life in Modern Theravāda and Korean Buddhism. In the Theravāda Buddhist countries almost every male enters the monkhood at least once in life for a limited period. Returning from monkhood poses no problems in these societies. In the Theravāda societies the Sangha is the most highest group. Though the financial management of the Sangha also depends on the lay Buddhists. However, Korean Buddhism has different historical background. In fact, there are visible asymmetry between the two groups. Korean lay Buddhist, as a Mahāyāna Buddhist hope to be a bodhisattva. Therefore, Korean lay Buddhist has different role and system from Theravāda. Furthermore, this study will be concerned about the problems of role of lay Buddhists in relation to similarities and differences between them. And it is also presented some assumptions that might help solution of these problems.
