Abstract

This study explores Lee, Dong-Inn who tried to reform Buddhism with other reformist monks devoted to the reformation of Joseon Buddhism, and with the civilization of the Joseon Dynasty. Buddhist studies has not inquired into the reason for the existence of Buddhism during the Joseon civilization. In particular, a study of Lee Dong-Inn who is an important person when discussing the history of the Buddhism in the Joseon period has not been conducted. Also,there has been no research institute to study him and no creation of adequate conditions to hand down a historical tradition of Joseon Buddhism. First, in the history of Joseon Buddhism in its civilization period,Joseon Buddhism went through some changes after King Sunjo and newly developed during the. Under the influence of reformation in Japan, are form group was organized in Joseon. Lee Dong-Inn, a Buddhist monk, cooperated with there formist group that endeavored to open a new era through reformation. Second, the reform group, which was intended to make Buddhism into a new idea for a new era, tried to change the Joseon Dynasty with reference to the development of Daicing Gurun and Japan. Especially, with the help of Lee Dong-Inn, they paid attention to the reformation of Japan. He delivered the idea of reformation of Japan to the reform group through - Gyun. While Lee devoted himself to passing along the in formation about reform ation of Japan to the group, Empero he go tacquainted with Gojong. It is fair to say that he engaged in politics. Third, knowledge of Lee Dong-Inn giving information about the reformation of Japan to the reform group was missing. Therefore,the Buddhist circle could not identify the truth of his death and properly recognize his achievements at that time. Now I think there is the necessity of historical review, through the examination of Lee Dong-Inn, of Buddhists who worked in the civilization period of the Joseon Dynasty. So this study aims to analyze his ideas correctly.
