Abstract
Vedanā in Buddhism is a subjective response to the stimuli and initial building block of affective dimension that arises depending on the contact of the three factors of sense organs, object, and consciousness. Vedanā tells about ‘how’ the object is when sañña does ‘what’ it is. Vedanā arises involuntarily regardless of one’s intention, and its arise does not necessarily presuppose the affirmation of sañña. When contacting the object, the experience of vedanā is unavoidable. And it transfers the object to the one of greed, aversion, and ignorance. Vedanā has a strong conditioning impact not only on full-blown emotions but also on conscious contents with underlying tendency of craving and hatred. Vedanā transforms external stimuli into internal information with subjective quality. Vedanā is a universal experience of all mankind. “Affect” in emotion research is the term similar to vedanā. It differs from ‘emotion’ and ‘feeling’ and is a much simpler feeling with two features of valence and arousal. It is the concept explained in terms of the impact and role of verification that provide the basis in the process of establishing the concept of ‘self’ and ‘reality’. The purpose of this work is to examine the Buddhist vedanā through the findings of emotion research in the Neuroscience. To do so, I inspect the meaning of different terms that refer emotion, the denial of presupposing the essential categories of emotion, and the process of neural transmission of emotion. Therefore, this study seeks to reflect vedanā through the neuroscientific findings on emotion not only to expand the understanding of vedanā but also to guide daily experiences related to it.
