Abstract
In this study, hydrogel microneedles containing metformin HCl were fabricated using chitosan and PVA. Metformin HCl causes gastrointestinal disorders when administered orally and has a short half-life, so it has the disadvantage of being taken 2-3 times a day, resulting in low patient compliance. Therefore, in order to minimize gastrointestinal disorders that occur during oral administration and increase patient compliance, this study adjusted the ratio of chitosan and PVA to 1:1, 1:2, and 1:3 to develop a drug that can continuously release the drug for 24 hours. The goal was to manufacture and evaluate hydrogel microneedles. It was confirmed that the microneedles had appropriate strength and flexibility to penetrate the skin at all ratios, and more than 80% of the drug was released over 24 hours. Among them, it was confirmed that the 1:2 ratio is the optimal ratio for sustained release of the drug, which can be expected to minimize gastrointestinal disorders that occur during oral administration of metformin HCl and increase patient compliance.
