25.0과 SPSS PROCESS macro ver.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to verify the moderated mediating effect of hope on the relationship between smartphone addiction and depression via impulsivity in middle-aged adults. Data were collected through a survey of 289 employees selected using purposive sampling from 16 workplaces located in Seoul. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS PC+ Win ver. 25.0 and SPSS PROCESS macro ver. 4.2, and the research findings are as follows. First, the difference test showed that depression did not significantly differ based on gender, marital status, or educational level. Second, correlation analysis among the key variables indicated positive correlations between smartphone addiction and impulsivity, as well as between impulsivity and depression. Meanwhile, hope showed a negative correlation with smartphone addiction, impulsivity, and depression. Third, the analysis of the mediating effect of impulsivity and the moderated mediating effect of hope on the relationship between smartphone addiction and depression confirmed that hope mediates the relationship between smartphone addiction, impulsivity, and depression. Specifically, impulsivity mediated the effect of smartphone addiction on depression, and hope played a moderating role in this mediating effect. Based on these findings, strategies to reduce depression in middle-aged adults by addressing smartphone addiction and impulsivity while enhancing hope were discussed.
