Abstract
This study examined the mediating effect of parenting behaviors on the relationship between maternal values regarding children, maternal self-esteem, and infant temperament. For this purpose, data from the 2022 Korean Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) Panel Study were utilized. The survey was conducted from February to September 2022, targeting mothers as primary caregivers of infants aged between 3 and 12 months. Data were analyzed using SPSS (Ver. 21.0), employing descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, multiple regression, and mediation analysis. The results showed: First, maternal values regarding children, maternal self-esteem, parenting behaviors, and infant temperament were all significantly correlated. Second, maternal values and self-esteem had significant effects on infant temperament. Third, parenting behaviors partially mediated the relationship between maternal values and self-esteem and infant temperament. These findings suggest that infant temperament can be influenced by mothers’ internal characteristics and parenting behaviors. Therefore, parent education during infancy should not only focus on parenting skills but also include approaches to strengthen mothers’ psychological resources.
