Abstract

Jeong-il Jang can be cited as a representative writer who shows the dominant image and sense of the ‘era’ of the 1990s. This study examines why Sun-woo Jang made Jung-il Jang’s work into a film, focusing on Jang Sun-woo’s <Sending Me to You>, and discusses, in particular, the issue of women’s sexuality that Jang Sun-woo represents as a movie. First of all, it is necessary to look at the situation in the 1990s. There was an erotic film in the 1980s, and eroticism embodied erotic videos in the 1990s. Since the 2000s, the pattern of film dramas representing eroticism changed as videos were digitized because of the spread of the Internet. In the process of this change, the movie <Sending Me to You> is one of the best movies to show the representation of sexuality in the 1990s among Jang Sun-woo’s works in the 1990s. Sun-woo Jang advocated “light pornography” while planning <Sending Me to You> based on the original novel. The nerd things of male characters are essential for both Jang Jung-il and Jang Sun-woo, and these male characters have failed socially and are sexually impotence. They do not have the virtue of productivity, an important factor in a capitalist society, and are described as not having economic, social, and sexual productivity. In particular, the male protagonist “Writer” and his friend “Banker” show the correlation between work productivity and sexual function. <Writer> presents who gives up dreams in modern society and his productivity by accepting the current public orders. It reveals the negativity of modern society by giving up a social authority rather than actively incorporating them into society. Next, Sun-woo Jang represents a woman’s body, not different from the existing erotic film. The characteristic of <Sending Me to You>, however, he gives the feeling of “raw” when implementing eroticism by not using background music or special props in the sex sequence. materialization of a woman’s body is strengthened because he emphasizes the buttocks of “Women in Pants” by erasing the presence of women and strengthening the fetishism with “butts.” In this film, female characters become the objects that reflect male characters’ desires without revealing women’s sexuality, women’s sexual desire, and women’s desires. It causes the director Sun-woo Jang to lose his avant-garde characteristic.
