Abstract

This paper identifies three major trends in South Korean social films between 2011 and 2017. The first consists of “social problem films” that deal with socioeconomic problems such as the right to livelihood, labor rights, and the human rights of people with disabilities, often based on contemporaneous true stories. The second trend includes “historical films” through the historical memory of the 1980s that illuminate the crisis of institutional democracy brought about by conservative governments. The third category encompasses “conspiracy films”, which, while maintaining the most commercial and genre-oriented framework, portray the entrenched corruption of the privileged class and political scandals in a conspiratorial mode. Following the success of Silenced (2011), social problem films based on real events paralleled the rise of social movements in the early to mid-2010s, raising persistent socioeconomic concerns. However, their commercial limitations were evident: they often revolved around specific and “narrow” issues, addressed social problems that no administration could easily resolve, and employed somewhat dated and conventional forms of realism and melodrama that lagged behind their earnest social consciousness. By contrast, historical films such as The Attorney (2013), A Taxi Driver (2017), and 1987: When the Day Comes (2017) aligned with the political and social momentum that encouraged audiences/citizens to see themselves not as passive observers but as active participants in history, foregrounding narratives of transformation from ordinary citizens to democratic citizens. Finally, conspiracy films like Inside Men (2015) and The King (2017) skillfully used the widespread disillusionment generated by numerous scandals in the early to mid-2010s-such as the BBK stock manipulation case, the sinking of the Cheonan warship, the National Intelligence Service's interference in elections, and the Sewol Ferry disaster-as rich material for genre films. By doing so, they transformed the public's feelings of disillusionment and anger toward the ruling elite during the final years of the Park Geun-hye administration into a form of popular catharsis.
