Abstract

The evaluation of General Paik Seon-yeop varies. However, the battlefield leadership he showed as a division commander in the Battle of Dabudong has taught us many lessons. Dabudong on the defense line of the Nakdong River was a very important battle compared to the Battle of Verdun during World War I. In Dabudong, the ROK Army’s 1st Division, commanded by General Baek Seon-yup, focused more than 4 divisions, including less tank divisions, to concentrate the overwhelmingly superior combat power of 10:1. If the Dabu-dong line of defense collapsed, it was difficult to maintain the Nakdong River line of defense, and eventually the existence of the country was at risk. He carried out his mission while persuading and caring for his subordinates while maintaining calm and boldness amid the pressure as if carrying the fate of the nation on one body. In addition, leadership is not only oriented inside the organization, but also influences externally to achieve public interest. From this point of view, it is necessary to deeply recognize that the lead of General Paik Seon-yup played a role in resolving the mistrust that the US military had with the commanders of the Korean military in the early Korean War. Finally, as Clausewitz emphasized, it is the duty of all executives currently leading the military to study the leadership that competent senior commanders showed to overcome the frictional elements of the battlefield and complete the mission through the study of the history of war.
