초록
For a long time, World War I was labelled and remembered as a European war. Academic interest in the war, its traumas, and legacies has not waned since the Armistice; recently, academics have started making conscious attempts to find new angles to examine the war, shedding light on heretofore overlooked perspectives, experiences, and contributions. Despite these efforts, it seems that the European sentiment and lens still take center stage, and colonial records remain underrepresented, particularly if they are literary, not socio-historical, accounts. Perceiving this gap, this article reads poetry samples on the Great War side by side, in an attempt to create a certain dialogue between the varied productions and the cultures that produced them and to foreground the ways in which the war experience was felt and remembered in Britain, and by its European enemy, Germany, as well as its colonies, India and Egypt, highlighting the similarities and differences.
