초록

This paper examines how marriage influences women to protect their property in a male-centered society, through three dramas. From Euripides’ Medea to The Merchant of Venice and The Duchess of Malfi, the property owned by female characters is desired by male characters, according to the ideology of gender role in the relevant periods. However, the female protagonists try to overcome conventional limitations in their own ways, having no other option than establishing safeguards through marriage within a male-oriented society. Portia is often compared to Medea because both characters share the common trait that their property plays a key role in the development of the dramatic plot until they demonstrate their abilities. Likewise, though rather tragically, The Duchess of Malfi reveals the conflict caused by the brothers’ infringement on the Duchess’ property and remarriage. Therefore, this article attempts to deal with the issue of marriage and the property of women, as found in characters struggling behind the surface themes of classical dramas.
