Abstract
Lee, Sang’s “Wings” has been steadily researched since the 1950s, after it was published in the magazine Jokwang in 1936. These studies have been attempted in various ways, from psychological and psychoanalytic studies, to techniques of works such as irony and metaphors, and from modernism to the postmodern perspective. It is true that these researches have achieved various results. It is surprising, however, that many researches to date have overlooked the meaning of the first sentence of "wings": "Do you know the stuffed genius?" This paper starts at this point. This paper examines the meaning of “genius” through Nietzsche’s Also sprach Zarathustra where Nietzsche wrote the core of his philosophy. Considering the metaphors of genius, play, noon image, and wings described in “Wings”, the short story “Wings” can be a literary reflection of what Nietzsche emphasizes in his philosophist text, Also sprach Zarathustra. Many researchers regard "genius" and "stuff" as mentioned in the first sentence of "wings" as ironic or paradox from bizarreness caused by a combination of meaningless or unknown languages. However, in this paper, the meaning of “genius” is understood as the Korean translation of German “Übermensch,” which is the key word of Also sprach Zarathustra that the ironist Nietzsche's ideas are well implied. ‘Übermensch’ means a free spirit (der freie Geist) that constantly moves forward and overcomes self. or someone with that spirit. What such a ‘Übermensch’ is stuffed means the situation that one is locked in nothing and his or her hope is lost. While Nietzsche sees the nobles who have lost hope as those whose wings are torn, the phrase "genius stuffed" is exquisitely touched with the wish of "I" to fly again at the end of the short story. In other words, this first sentence provides an important starting point for understanding the overall structure of “Wings”.
