Abstract

This study is an analysis of the change of meaning in the historical and spatial space of Iran's hijab practice. The meaning of hijab has different cultural and policy meanings in each culture, and is reproduced in various ways according to the domain of political, policy, historical and private spheres in a single national unit. In this paper, I compare the hijab policies in the era of the Pahlavi dynasty and under the Islamic Republic of Iran. It also centers on the relationship between women as controlled objects and the subject that grants laws and regulations relating to Iran's hijab regulations that apply in the public spaces. In this paper, I delve into the cultural significance of hijab practices in Iran's residential space. The role and meaning of hijab in the public sphere are determined by biological sex, but in residential space the hijab practice shows that the performativity of social status is working beyond the boundaries of men and women.
