Abstract
This paper focuses on the war narratives of the book of 2Chronicles. There have been scholarly debates on whether to read the Chronicles as an eschatological composition. The majority idea on this topic is that the book of Chronicles would be read as ‘theocratic-hierocractic composition’ rather than as ‘visionary-eschatological.’ Although some scholars such as H. G. M. Williamson propose to read the eschatology in Chronicles, they have not paid much attention to the war narratives. By surveying the fourteen war narratives in 2Chronicles, I try to show that there are some common features in them. All the wars situated in the Divided Kingdom, without exception, were divinely engaged, and experienced miracles by divine interventions. The next question is with these literary features what theological messages the Chronicler attempts to deliver to the Second Temple Jewish Community in the late Persian period. This paper suggests that the war narratives in 2Chronicles rally ideological opposition to militarism of Persia Empire. The Chronicler makes efforts to visualize the power of God through the miraculous victories or defeats. All the war narratives share one thing in common, that is, that God is the Master who plans all things. Humans are mere witnesses what God has done. In addition, in case that Jewish army is defeated, the Chronicler interprets, following the prophetic theology, foreign army as a divine instrument for God’s own people. This theology is indeed a prophetic tradition inherited and developed by the Chroniclers. If this theological strand is completely studied, it is barely possible to put a label on the Chroniclers entirely as a priestly composition.
