Abstract

This study focuses on the image of Pharaoh and the midwives in Exodus 1. Especially it introduces mainly the perspectives of the feminist theologians and registers my thorough analysis. My critical perspective does not necessarily mean negative views on the feminist interpretations, but shows that their studies have certainly much positive aspects and insight. I try to illustrate the various bases of the feminist theologians’ view on Pharaoh’s stupidity as well as the midwives’ wisdom and to analyze them with critical mind. Based on the contemporary Egyptian society and gender roles, regarding Pharaoh as a stupid ruler seems to be less persuasive. Pharaoh’s first measure (preventing Israel’s population increase) was very different from his second and third measures (genocide of male infants) in terms of their primary purposes. It has to be clarified when we interpret three measures of Pharaoh. The Egyptian king who did not order to kill those female infants, was not stupid at all from this point of view. The main characters who played an important role in nullifying Pharaoh’s second and third measures, were all females. However, at the time the midwives were all women and Pharaoh needed their cooperation for the success of his measures. Therefore, the fact that they were women is not the crucial factor in the stream of the narrative. Ultimately in the arena of the biblical interpretation, the important studies of the feminist theologians do not make the traditional male-oriented studies futile at all. Instead, those studies make the limited perspectives of the male theologians to become broader and deeper and they could be applied to interpreting the biblical texts in a very positive way. This promising cooperation will result in the much prolific outcomes in biblical studies. In the study of Exodus 1, the stupidity of Pharaoh and wisdom of the midwives that the feminist theologians contrasted and emphasized very much, could be understood differently considering Sitz im Leben in the contemporary Egyptian society where Pharaoh and the midwives had lived together.
