Abstract

The thoughts of ‘Serving-God' and ‘Meditating-Self’ in Donghak tell us of the internal relationship between humans and heaven, in which the one becomes the object, as well as the subject of the other, and vice versa. In these thoughts, Donghak strongly inspired individuals to realize how much they are responsible for their own fates and for their own history-making in realities, particularly in the late 19th century of the Chosun Dynasty in Korea. These key thoughts of Donghak had been strongly promulgated for people's public happiness in both its widespread religious movement since 1860s and its peasant revolution in 1894. Likewise, the Shrewd Steward parable in the Gospel of Luke(16:1-9) symbolically implicates the very provoking manner of public happiness, and how shrewdly the members of the faith community must find out and perform its public salvage plan for not being destroyed or dismantled in the world. Jesus of Nazareth, the parable speaker, is said to have triggered the audience in the Lukan context to go back or, at least, remind again of their ancient Jewish Jubilee tradition, especially by way of adopting its key law, that is, "debt-reduction."For this purpose, this paper presents a new approach to the Shrewd Steward parable of Luke's Gospel, in view of some major ideas of Donghak, exploring the reality that any religious text always has to be reinterpreted; reach a relevance to present realities; and reject any fossilized or dogmatic reductionism by constant changes of perspective. This paper suggests that public happiness of the human community comes from following the model of “the Steward event," symbolizing Jesus' incarnation, which perfectly practiced the so-called "adventures of Ideas." The steward event is based on the principle of paradox that allows mutual living between community members, enabling them to realize the Biblical picture of the Kingdom of God on the earth. The steward event strongly implicates an internal relationship between God and humans, which means circulation and continuity instead of sticking to a hierarchical order, taking a part and the whole in each other at the same time. For the public happiness of the human community, in particular, the faith community needs to recognize that, in the past and present, they have been the very steward community, particularly for the poor, that internalizes the practice of global redistribution as the most important responsibility in accordance with its evangelistic demand. Where is the church today headed? Is it a shrewd or an unjust steward, which may be jeopardized by the Master's fatal warning for discharge, having neglected its duty on the poor?
