Abstract
Micah chapter 6 verse 4 is the only biblical text that include Miriam in the list of leaders of the Exodus, along with ‘Moses and Aaron’. However, little research has been done on Micah 6:4 which is an important proof of depiction of Miriam’s leadership. This article identifies the historical background of the editing that occurred in this text. It does so using literary-criticism of a rare text which lifts up Miriam and suggests a revival of Miriam (Micah 6:4) and reconstruction of her leadership. A study of chapters 6 and7, which contains the text of Miriam, reveals that it was edited after the period of exile. The main texts of the Bible which mention Miriam before Micah 6:4 are Exodus 15:20-21 and Numbers 12:1-15. The former is an ancient poem, which tells us that Miriam used to be a prophetess as a leader at the time of the Exodus, and that this view was contained within the original tradition of the Exodus. The latter shows that Miriam’s figure was distorted and tarnished by later editing. Paradoxically, however, one can see that Miriam was a leader with sufficient authority and recognition within the community. Micah 6:4 inserted Miriam as the leader of the Exodus, along with the ancient tradition of the book of Exodus 15, breaking with the tradition of the book of Numbers 12. This writing (Micah 6:4) came after the exile, the fall of the dynastic powers. Miriam of Micah 6:4 has two kinds of meanings. First, it reminds Israel of the work of salvation which God had done, and confesses faith in Yahweh who gave liberation and victory. Miriam was the very prophetess who was sent by Yahweh the savior and the leader of the victory song. The text of Micah edited in post- exile has not only been a confession of past beliefs, but has reinterpreted the Exodus as an expression of hope for the future. In this context, Miriam’s dance and song could have increased the hope of a new Exodus. And Miriam’s re-emergence would have been a comfort and hope for the women’s community who were troubled in the exile period. It would also represent the spirit of the Minjung prophet crying out for justice on the part of the people. This study provides insight into Miriam’s leadership with one verse of Micah.
