Abstract
The purpose of this article is to examine Naomi’s faith and frustration through an intertextual study of Naomi’s decision to leave Moab (Ruth 1:6-7) and her agitated appearance upon her return to Bethlehem (1:19-22). Scholars have mainly focused on the importance of the verbs “heard”, “arose” and “left”, or on the verb “returned”, in Ruth 1:6-7. However, the three action verbs “arose”, “left” and “walked”, which were used in the context of the two occurrences of “return” in Ruth 1:6-7, are also noteworthy. Through these three action verbs, we can observe that Ruth 1:6-7 is alluding to Exodus 12:31 and Samuel 23:13. These verbs evince a response to God’s special providence. Comparing Naomi’s case to the two other incidents, we can see Naomi’s great faith through her decision to return to Bethlehem even without directly hearing God’s voice or witnessing miraculous works. Naomi’s arrival at Bethelehem is also of significance. Scholars have noted Naomi’s silence regarding Ruth’s commitment on their way back to Bethlehem (1:18) and the continuation of such silence even after the arrival in Bethlehem (1:19-22). The first and second silences shows Naomi’s disdain for Ruth. In sum, we see Naomi’s faithfulness to God through her decision to leave Moab upon hearing God’s care for His people in Bethlehem and her frustration upon her arrival at Bethlehem through her blaming God and her lack of mention of Ruth in her conversation with people. Thus, Ruth Chapter 1 portrays Naomi as a realistic human figure with ambivalent feelings toward God.
